Customer Rating: Summary: couldnt ask for anything more from an adjustable dumbbell set Comment: When I first started looking for an adjustable dumbbell set I was going to purchase the Bowflex Select Tec's. But after reading a lot of reviews I went with the Power Blocks. I am very happy with these, they are not as bulky as the select tecs, they are easy to adjust the weight, and they are very sturdy. I purchased the 20-60 pound set and it is less bulky than a standard hex head 60 pound dumbbell. I did read several reviews that said they where a lot cheaper than the bowflex adjustable, I could not find a comparable set of power blocks that where cheaper than the Select Tec's.
Customer Rating: Summary: Powerblock Personal Plus Works for me Comment: Powerblock Personal / Plus
Pros:
Solid, well constructed, quick weight change design.
Selector pin never loosens or requires mid work out tightening like other adjustables.
Although plates shift slightly when in motion I've never worried about the system failing.
10 Year warranty, made in the USA.
Truly portable with no need for a cradle or stand.
Despite other users complaints the Personal Plus handle upgrade works fine for me. The welded plates are so thin you would have to have monster hands for this to be an issue.
If you've ever looked at these on auctions sites or classifieds, they really hold their value.
Cons:
Plates do make a clanging noise when in motion.
Changing plates when you are really fatigued can be a challenge if you don't get the selector pin exactly straight.
Don't expect a fancy work out DVD or exercise chart, you just get a black and white instruction manual. I suggest the laminated posters.
Putting your hand into a rectangular box does take some getting used to.
Customer Rating: Summary: I love these things Comment: I was looking for tehse things a long time, and the cheapest I found them was a website that offered them for 370 with free shipping. They are very expensive, but I love them. I invested in these dumbells, and an ajustable bench, and for 500 bucks I will never have to go to the gym again. Trust me, I've been into weight training for awhile now, and if you get these and a bench, you really don't need to ever go to the gym again. You figure you can hit every body part that you need to with plenty of exercises, and [...] you can find a tree branch, or pipe or somthing to do pullups, and nail 2 peices of wood to somthing to do dips (that way you save 200+ on not buying a pointless pull-up/dip station). Anways back to the product, If your worried 60lbs, arn't enough, trust me, they are a lot hard to use then normal dumbells. And if you are super macho, you can order additional weight. Lifetime warenty (although they are very durable and probably won't ever need to use it). Stop wasting money and time at the gym.
Customer Rating: Summary: Not for guys with big hands Comment: I own the Personal Block 5-45 pound set and I love them. I'm about to need a larger amount of weight so I went to the store to check out the 20 lb. handle that you can add on (same handle that comes with this set). I was very disappointed because the way they make the handle weigh 20 lbs. instead of 5 is by welding plates to the sides and bottom. The problem is that my knuckle bumps into the side plate preventing me from getting a solid grip on the handle. I was planning on adding the 20 lb. handle but I'm looking at individual dumbbells now for my higher weights.
UPDATE: I ended up purchasing a pro set (5-85 lbs. per dumbbell) from Power Blocks directly. This set comes with a set of 5 lb. handles and a set of 10 lb. handles so that you can vary the weights in 5 lb. increments. The set also came with a stand. I love them. Power Blocks are the nicest dumbbells I have seen (dollar for dollar).
