Summary: Only works randomly
Comment: I read all the positive reviews and gave this product a try. Unfortunately, I experienced the same problem that only one reviewer had: the heart monitor only worked at random times.
I would put the strap on, tried adding gel to allow better contact, but the watch would monitor my heart rate for a few seconds and immediately loose its signal.
I returned it. Too bad since it looked like a nice product from a well known company.

Summary: Great training aid
Comment: Bought this to replace my old Ironman 30-lap (no HR) in preparation for my first marathon. I had read a number of reviews and decided that despite the few detractors it would probably work well for me and so far I have no complaints.
Overall the construction is solid and looks like it can take a beating. The strap is different than the older models (not sure if it's replaceable) but it appears to be very good quality and has lots of notches to ensure a good fit.
I was not able to do the HR set up on my own but a quick read of the manual explained everything very clearly. It picked up my heart rate right away and is very accurate. When I'm using it in the gym I compare it to what the cardio machines indicate and it's right on.
The chest strap stays in place (did not budge during a 3-hour run) and does not pinch or irritate the skin. You can change the battery yourself which is a plus.
This is an excellent watch and the Amazon.com price is hard to beat.

Summary: My heart stops beating
Comment: As a serious runner, I bought this watch so that I could see how hard my heart was working during workouts. Apparently my heart just stops because the heart rate monitor frequently just stops working. No heart rate signal. Nothing. I thought a new battery in the chest strap would fix the problem, but it didn't. The monitor will work fine for a while during a workout, then just stops. I am quite disappointed with this watch because this function is one of it's distinguishing features that sets it apart from other sports watches.

Accept no imitations or limitations. There is only one Timex IRONMAN* Triathlon®. Stylish enough for the weekend warrior, technical enough for the extreme athlete. Don't swim, bike, run, jump, climb, throw, or kick without one.
