Customer Rating: Summary: Best used inside Comment: The rotation and length adjustment is great, but the rope itself gets pretty beat up on the pavement. Might be best used in a gym.
Customer Rating: Summary: The Only Rope For Me Comment: Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R1L8XJSXEB0MYQ Update: Video and text on rope adjustment, maintenance - http://www.questforendorphins.com/jumpropemaint.aspx
It occured to me after making the video that the weight of the rope can make all the difference in learning. I was lucky that I started on this rope, because after reviewing two other supposed "speed" ropes, I doubt I would have persisted long enough to learn because they were so heavy.
You may think that a heavy rope is a good idea for a harder workout and it will build the upper body faster. That may be true, but for a harder workout, just spin the rope faster - jumping, in my opinion, should be about quickness and agility. If you want to build the upper body, add resistance training. I'm not sure it's a good idea to ramp up the g-forces pulling on your arms for a continuous period of time anyway. For a light upper body workout, try Heavy Hula Hands as demonstrated on my web site.
As far as the actual weight difference: this rope weighs 98 grams (3.45 oz). One of the other two almost identical ropes I reviewed weighs 208 grams (7.4 oz). So not only is it twice as heavy, but depending on how much of the weight is in the cord (seems like most), it will increase in apparent weight over twice as fast when you spin it, causing unnecessary pull on the arms. It's also going to hurt when it hits you, and near misses become actual misses because the rope is thicker - meaning it will hit you and hurt you more often. It will also collapse at lower speeds, meaning even more misses.
I started on this rope because in about 2002 I read an article in Business Week about Buddy Lee that got me started. That's weird in two ways.
(1) I never read Business Week except after visiting my father and being exposed endlessely to cable business news - it makes me want to be a grown-up too.
(2) It's Business Week, what are the odds I'd read an article on sports equipment?
Anyway, I ordered the rope from his site and that's what I learned on.
All the details on maintenance, adjusting length, and everything else I can show you about this rope will soon be available on my site. I'm not going to waste any more time and money reviewing other ropes when the only way I know to improve this one would be to make it indestructible.
Speaking of which. You may want to buy just one at first, but if you find you like it, go ahead and buy another one or two. I hit the cord on my rope on something real sharply near the cd player just yeaterday, and it broke immediately after that. Fortunately I always have a second rope ready to go.
When I was discussing cost and said in the video that 'ropes' were $5.00, I meant replacement cords were $5.00. "Buddy Lee Jump Ropes" will also send you more little brass connector thingies free if you need them. Regardless of all that, this rope would have to be $30.00 before I'd start trying to find a replacement.
This rope is supposed to be good for heights up to 6 ft. 5 in., but for any height over 6'2" I'd consider a rope with 6" more length, Magic Speed Jump Rope. As far as I can tell, it's identical except the cord is 9'6" rather than 9' long and it comes with a video that I'm not familiar with.
Customer Rating: Summary: No need for any other rope Comment: As someone who jumps rope regularly, this rope is the best of any I've tried. I've purchased more expensive ropes and cheaper ropes. This rope is faster than any rope I've used, it has very few parts to break down, and the length of the handles helps with doubles, triples, cross-overs, etcetera. Before finding these available on Amazon--which is so much easier--I went to great lengths to find these ropes specifically.
You may not think you need a fast rope, but if you are interested in maximizing your aerobic workout, speed is key. If you are interested in the plyometric applications of jumping rope, speed is also key. In other words, you need speed in a rope and this has it. You won't be disappointed!
